This past Wednesday in my Newhouse Social Media class, my teammates and I presented on Gelocation. For the past few weeks #SM4geolocation has been researching about our topic, its history, where geolocation currently stands, and where geolocation will go in the future. As a team we collaborated with some very useful tools to find out as much information as we could about the geolocation platform.

As applications such as Yelp, Foursqaure, and Facebook all embedded Geolocation into their programs, it was interesting to read articles on people’s thoughts about how Geolocation is affecting all of these programs either in a positive or negative way.

While working on this presentaton, #SM4geolocation communicated with our TA Lynessa and Dr. Ward for useful tools to incorporate into our project. Our team met in class, tweeted at one another, and emailed back and forth through Google Documents. However, I feel that our best way to hangout was through Google + Hangout. This past Sunday, my teammates and I did a Google + Hangout with Dr. Ward to go through our presentation to see what we needed to fix or add to our presentation. This was my first time doing a Google + Hangout so I didn’t know what to expect. Dr. Ward showed up different links to click on in Google + Hangout and how we could work on our PowerPoint while we are on the Google + Hangout together. Dr. Ward explained to us that a few weeks ago Google + Hangout wasn’t even a possible option for “skyping.” I think that Google + Hangout will really start become more and more useful for people of all ages to communicate with more than one person via videoconference. Here is a picture of when our Google + Hangout looked like:

Another way we communicated was using Pearltrees, a site where you can collect data from the Internet and organize it into “trees.” We used Pearltrees to collect information about Geolocation that we could use in our presentation. We were able to log onto Pearltrees and share articles that were related to Geolocation in the #SM4geolocation Pearltree.

Click on #SM4geolocation Pearltree to view our group’s Pearltree.

After our presentation we used a few other tools to analyze the impact we made in the social media world. Hashtracking and Tweetreach showed us the range of people our hashtag #SM4geolocation reached. According to Hashtracking Report, 253 tweets generated 107,180 impressions, reaching an audience of 27,169 followers since April 11, 2012. We also organized tweets we received about our presentation on Storify.

Below is a photo taken by Dr. Ward during our presentation.

The question everyone is wondering is what is next for geolocation and where can it go in the future? At the end of our presentation, our group showed a YouTube video of a project by google called “project glass.” It shows an “augmented reality” of what the future may hold for geolocation.

I hope everyone in #NewhouseSM4 enjoyed our presentation!
My first experience with social media began in 2000 when I got an AOL account. I didn’t really understand what social media was but all I knew was that if my friends were getting AOL I had to also. When MySpace came out I was going to create an account, but my parents wouldn’t let me because they didn’t feel it was a safe website. When I was a senior in high school all my friends were starting to get Facebook. I decided that Facebook was a great tool for meeting people who were attending Syracuse University. I created an account, added pictures, and wrote things about myself in the different sections.

Now in 2012, my understanding and usage of social media is very different than it was when I started in 2000. Social media has enabled me to brand myself by using various platforms to talk in about the news industry. Twitter is my favorite site because it allows me to network and start conversations with friends, famous people, and various companies that I would potentially be interested in when I graduate.

My enhancement in social media and networking started this year in my COM 400, Social Media course. My professor, Dr. William Ward had us sign up for Hootsuite, a social media communications dashboard, where I can manage all my social media websites on one page.

Through my internships at News 12 Long Island, I saw how social media is utilized in a business setting. When I graduate in May from Newhouse, I plan to use my social media tools in my career in the news industry. In 2012, it is hard to imagine a world without social media sites. Social media is apart of my personal and professional life and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
